A name on the frame isn’t a fit. We’ll guide you, honestly. Something else in mind? We can order almost any frame in for you to try, with no obligation.
The edit: four looks for autumn.
Try any of these looks at your free styling appointment.
Try everything. Leave with yours.
Your glasses are part of how you look, not just how you see.
An appointment with a dispensing optician, just for you. We look at your face shape, your colouring and your day, then bring you a short list, not a wall of frames.
Bring a prescription from anywhere. Before you choose, we show you how your lenses will look in each frame: how thick, how heavy, how they sit.
“They will tell you if a frame does not suit you, which for me is crucial.”
No obligation to buy.
Something for every budget.
Tell us yours, and we’ll find frames you love inside it. Every option priced before you choose.
If the fit or the lenses aren’t right, we change them at no charge.
The right lens for your day.
Whatever your prescription. Every option explained, every price shown first, every pair measured to the millimetre at Armitage Opticians.
Single vision £109 – £499 · varifocals and complex prescriptions priced with you, five levels on paper · minor repairs and adjustments while you wait.
We match the lens to your eyes and your day, not to a supplier. We use Zeiss, Hoya, Rodenstock and Essilor, four of the world’s leading lens makers, and our first choice is Hoya. If you’ve been told you need a particular lens, we can get it.
Patients come to us in Heckmondwike from Dewsbury, Batley, Mirfield, Cleckheaton, Liversedge, Birstall and Huddersfield. Half today, the rest over up to 10 months, interest free.

When your eyes need more than a test.
Dry eye, BlephEx and IPL in Heckmondwike: our dry eye clinic for West Yorkshire, and blepharitis treatment in Heckmondwike.
An eye test that feels like a game.

“We run every practice, including Heckmondwike, by one rule: treat every patient the way we’d treat our own family.”
I’m Sohail, an optometrist and one of the two directors. Abra and I didn’t open our practices to get people through an eye test as fast as possible. We’d both sat in the other chair, been rushed, and been pushed towards glasses we didn’t need.
So you get forty-five minutes, your scans on the screen in front of you, and optometrists who’ll tell you plainly when you don’t need new glasses. It’s also why most of the people you meet here have been with us for years. If your eyes have a problem nobody has taken seriously, we will.

The same faces, every visit.
Your optometrist does your eye test and explains it. The dispensing team help you choose. Front of house book you in, sort NHS forms, and ring you back when they say they will.

Just down the road from Dewsbury, Batley and Cleckheaton.
Right in the middle of Heckmondwike: parking on Market Street and at the Green car park, and the 229 and 254 buses on the main road.
Each town has its own page, with the route, parking and what people there come to us for.
No. Forty-five minutes with your optometrist: twelve checks of your sight and eye health, a photograph of the back of each eye, and the 3D OCT scan if you want it. Nobody is waiting behind you. “Nothing was too much trouble. I wasn’t rushed into making a decision.”
The 3D OCT scan shows the layers behind the retina, where glaucoma, macular change and diabetic damage begin, years before you’d notice anything. You see the pictures yourself. “Very thorough, and very pleasant.”
Your scans go on the screen in front of you, and your optometrist explains them until they make sense. You leave knowing what’s healthy, what to watch, and what to do next. “Excellent care, and everything explained.”
No. We ask your budget first and work inside it. You see every option with its price, and if your prescription has barely changed, we’ll tell you. “Friendly staff, and no pressure to replace frames.”
Gentle, unhurried, and turned into a game. We explain everything to you both, and if a prescription keeps rising, we can slow it. Free on the NHS under 16. “A really lovely manner. My child was put at ease.”
We’re a family business, and we treat you the way we’d want our own family treated. We take time to understand you, tell you honestly what you need and what you don’t, and you see the same faces next time. “I have been coming for many years and the care remains exceptional.”
Yes, of course. Most of the eye tests we do end with “see you in two years”. If you need glasses we show you every option with its price, and there is no pressure at any point.
Free on the NHS if you qualify, £55 privately, and forty-five minutes either way. The 3D OCT scan is £35 and the dry eye gland scan £15, and both can be added to any test. Every price →
Yes, of every age, and free on the NHS under 16 (or under 19 in full-time education). Gentle, unhurried and explained to you both. If a prescription keeps rising year on year, we can slow it. Children’s eye tests →
Yes. A contact lens aftercare check is £70 for existing wearers, whoever fitted them, and fittings (£95, with free trial lenses) if you are new to lenses or want to change type, including multifocal and lenses for prescriptions that are harder to fit. Contact lenses →
Yes, minor and major, whether or not you bought them from us. Adjustments, nose pads, screws and small repairs are done while you wait. Larger repairs and replacement parts we send away, and we tell you the cost before we start.
Yes, £25. Bring the form with you and we complete the vision section after your eye test. Tell us when you book so we allow the time.
Yes, there is a toilet you are welcome to use. Step-free entrance from Market Street. Tell us when you book if there is anything that would make your visit easier.
Yes, £55, the same as a private eye test. Bring your current prescription, or what you were told elsewhere. We start from scratch, show you what we find on the screen, and tell you plainly whether we agree.
The school screen isn’t an eye test. Ours is: the prescription measured properly, a check for a squint or a lazy eye while it can still be fixed, the two eyes working together, and the health of the eye inside and out. Pictures and matching cards, so no letters are needed. Every year while they’re growing, at Armitage in Heckmondwike.
“A really lovely manner. My child was put at ease.”
Myopia control in Heckmondwike too: if the prescription starts to climb, we slow it here with MiYOSMART, MiSight or Ortho-K. We look after complex children’s cases, and we fit Tomato Glasses: non-slip, safe, adjustable frames for children from babies under one to teenagers. Only 7 to 8 grams, flexible and hard to break, with adjustable temples and nose pads so they fit and stay put.
New to lenses, or never got on with the pair you were given? We assess your eyes and tears, take precise measurements, teach handling at your pace, and check the fit at a follow-up. Already wear lenses? Bring them and their boxes to your aftercare check. Your eye test is free on the NHS, or £55.
We wear glasses and contact lenses ourselves, so we know how it feels when they’re wrong. We look at your face, your colouring and your day, then bring you a shortlist, and we’ll gently tell you when one doesn’t suit. A brand isn’t a fit; we help you see the difference. “They will tell you if a frame does not suit you, which for me is crucial.”
Varifocals, thinner lenses, coatings, daily or monthly contact lenses, and overnight lenses that correct your sight while you sleep. We walk you through what each would do for you, so the choice is yours.
New lens designs, contact lenses and dry eye treatments arrive every year. We keep up with them, and tell you plainly when one would make a difference, and when it wouldn’t.
A prescription that’s been difficult to fit, a child whose sight keeps changing, dry eyes that drops have never settled. We take the time to find what works. “This is the first time anybody has mentioned the problems with dry eyes, which I have had for a number of years. I was given a course of action.”
Sixty days to love your glasses: if the fit or the lenses are not right, you choose an alternative frame or lenses at no charge. Adjustments and a Specs MOT are free for as long as you wear them. And if we get something wrong, we put it right; you will not be arguing at a desk.
Frames from £70 to £850, from the everyday collection to the boutique houses. Single vision lenses from £109 to £499, depending on your prescription and the design. Varifocals and complex prescriptions are priced with you, before you decide. Every option is shown with its price. Glasses and lenses →
Yes, 0% interest. On glasses: pay half today and spread the rest over 4, 6, 8 or 10 months. On dry eye treatment: pay in full, or half today and half at your next visit. Nothing added either way. Ask when you are choosing and we set it up at the desk.
Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:30pm · Saturday 9:00am – 3:00pm · Sunday closed. If those hours are difficult for you, ring us: we can usually find a time that works.
