Eye tests

NHS sight testFreeUnder 16, over 60, diabetes, glaucoma in the family, certain benefits. The 3D OCT scan can be added.

Frequently asked questions

Do I qualify for a free NHS eye test?

If you are under 16, under 19 in full-time education, 60 or over, diabetic, diagnosed with glaucoma, 40 or over with a close relative with glaucoma, registered sight-impaired, or receiving certain benefits. We check when you book.

What does the £55 private eye test include?

Forty-five minutes with an optometrist, twelve checks and a retinal photograph, with time to explain what we find. The £95 Gold examination adds the 3D OCT scan, which sees the layers behind the retina where glaucoma and macular disease start.

Do I have to buy glasses here after the test?

No. Many people do choose to, because the dispensing is done by someone who understands the prescription, and the test price is the same either way.

Can I spread the cost?

Why do some prices say quoted?

Because they depend on you: a varifocal is made to your prescription and frame, a scleral lens to the shape of your eye, a child’s myopia plan to the child. You get the figure in writing before anything is ordered.
