Questions

Contact lens questions

Can I try contact lenses for free?

Yes. Book a free contact lens trial at any of our five practices. We check your eyes suit lenses, put a pair in and show you how to handle them. There is no charge and no obligation.

How much is a contact lens fitting?

£95. It includes the assessment of your eyes and tears, measurements, trial lenses, teaching you to put them in and take them out, and a follow-up check of the fit.

I already wear lenses from somewhere else. Can you look after me?

Yes. An aftercare check is £70, whoever fitted your lenses. Bring your lenses and their boxes.

Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?

Usually, yes. Toric lenses hold their position on the eye so the astigmatism is corrected. We fit them at all five practices.

Are there varifocal contact lenses?

Yes. Multifocal lenses give distance and reading in one lens. Most people need a little time to adapt, so we fit them with a follow-up.

My lenses feel dry by the afternoon. What can I do?

Often the lens is not the problem: dry eye is. A different lens material can help, and our dry eye clinic starts with a free 20-minute consultation.

How much do contact lenses cost a month?

From £20 a month for monthly lenses and from £33 a month for daily lenses worn every day, both eyes, by direct debit and delivered to you. Lenses for astigmatism and varifocal lenses cost a little more. Your exact price is confirmed at the fitting.

Which contact lens brands do you fit?

Acuvue, CooperVision (MyDay, clariti, Biofinity, Proclear, MiSight), Alcon (Dailies Total1, Precision1, Air Optix) and Bausch + Lomb (ULTRA, Biotrue, SofLens, PureVision), plus coloured lenses.

Can you fit contact lenses for keratoconus?

Yes. We fit rigid, mini scleral, scleral and hybrid lenses from a map of your cornea at our Middleton practice; you can ask at any of our five. The specialist assessment and fitting is £200; scleral and mini scleral lenses are from £1,800 a pair, with flexible Direct Debit.

What is a mini scleral lens?

A large rigid lens that rests on the white of the eye and vaults over the cornea on a cushion of fluid. It gives sharp vision on an irregular cornea, such as keratoconus or after a graft, and is often more comfortable than a small rigid lens.

Do you fit Ortho-K overnight lenses?

Yes. Ortho-K lenses are worn while you sleep and taken out in the morning, so you see clearly all day. For children the first year is £995 (fitting, lenses and four reviews) after a £150 assessment; for adults it is £895 up to -4.00 or £1,150 up to -6.00 after a £95 assessment. Each year after is £495. The assessment fee comes off the first year if you go ahead.

Do I need an eye test first?

You need a prescription from the last two years. If yours is older, we do the eye test first: free on the NHS if you qualify, otherwise £55.

Try a pair free, then decide.
