Contact lens fitting at Armitage Opticians, Heckmondwike
We fit contact lenses across every prescription type and every lifestyle at our Heckmondwike practice — first-time wearers, lapsed wearers returning to lenses, complex prescriptions, kids in MiSight, over-45s in multifocals, sport-only wearers, dry eye patients who have struggled in lenses before. Whether you need a daily disposable for the gym, a monthly toric for moderate astigmatism, or a specialist OrthoK lens for overnight vision correction — we work through your full prescription, ocular surface health, and lifestyle before we recommend a lens.
The contact lens types we fit
Daily disposable soft lenses — Acuvue Oasys 1-day, Dailies Total1, MyDay Daily. Premium comfort, no cleaning, ideal for occasional or sport-only wear. Subscription from £32/month for full-time wear.
Monthly disposable soft lenses — CooperVision Biofinity, Alcon Total30, Bausch + Lomb Ultra. Cleaned and stored overnight in solution. Cheapest per day if you wear full-time. Subscription from £19/month.
Toric lenses (for astigmatism) — daily and monthly options. We fit astigmatism prescriptions from -0.75 to -2.75 dioptres, in axis steps of 10 degrees. Cylinder above 2.75 may require a custom-made lens (lead time 2-3 weeks).
Multifocal lenses (for reading + distance) — see our dedicated multifocal contact lens page. Daily and monthly options. Most fitted for ages 45-65 with moderate near corrections.
MiSight 1-day (for childhood myopia control) — dual-purpose: corrects vision AND slows myopia progression in children aged 8-15. Part of our MyoShield programme.
OrthoK (overnight rigid contact lenses) — worn while you sleep, removed in the morning. Your vision is corrected throughout the day with no glasses or contacts needed. Excellent for children’s myopia control and for adults who want lens-free daytime vision (sport, water, swimming, presenting). See SleepSight OrthoK.
The fitting process
Book a 45-minute contact lens consultation. We do a full ocular surface check — tear film, lid margin, corneal staining — before we even talk about lens types, because dry eye and lid disease are the two biggest reasons contact lens fittings fail. If we find signs of dry eye or blepharitis, we will sometimes recommend treating that first (via our EyeClean programme) before fitting lenses, because doing it the other way round usually fails.
Once we are happy with the ocular surface, we recommend a lens type based on your prescription, your lifestyle, and your budget. You go home with trial lenses for 1-2 weeks. We see you again to refine the prescription. Most patients settle on their final lens by visit 3.
What’s included in the fee
£95 contact lens fitting fee covers: all fitting visits, trial lenses, the final prescription, and 12 months of aftercare appointments. After 12 months, the subscription model continues your aftercare automatically as long as you keep your subscription active. If you decide contact lenses are not for you at any point during the fitting period, you pay the fitting fee but no ongoing subscription.
Subscription pricing: from £19/month for monthly disposables, £29/month for multifocal monthly, £32/month for daily disposables, £56/month for premium daily multifocal. Includes monthly postal delivery to your Heckmondwike address.
Frequently asked questions
I’ve never worn contacts — will I be able to?
Almost certainly yes. We spend the time at the first fitting making sure you are confident inserting and removing the lens before you leave with them. Most first-time wearers are wearing lenses comfortably within 1-2 weeks.
I have dry eye — can I wear contacts?
Often yes, but we want to treat the dry eye first. Daily disposables with high water-content materials (Total1, MyDay) work best for mild dry eye. For moderate dry eye, we treat the underlying meibomian gland dysfunction via our EyeClean programme first, then fit lenses afterwards.
Can I sleep in my contact lenses?
Standard soft lenses, no — sleeping in them significantly increases your risk of corneal infection. The exception is OrthoK lenses, which are specifically designed for overnight wear and shape the cornea while you sleep. See SleepSight OrthoK.
I gave up on contacts years ago — should I try again?
Yes, particularly if it was more than 5 years ago. Modern lens materials are dramatically more breathable and comfortable than the lenses of 10-15 years ago. Many of our most-satisfied lens patients are returning wearers who had assumed contacts were not for them.
