Italian since 1917. The arrow on the hinge says it all.
The silver arrow on the hinge that marks every Persol frame.
Giuseppe Ratti, a Turin optician and photographer, began making glasses and lenses for pilots and sportsmen in 1917. The name comes from the Italian “per il sole”, meaning “for the sun”.
Between the 1930s and 1950s Persol added the Meflecto flexible temple and the silver arrow on the hinge, said to be inspired by ancient warriors’ swords. Steve McQueen wore his own folding 714s in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), and the producers kept them in the film. Persol is part of EssilorLuxottica.
