Sports eyewear at Armitage Opticians, Heckmondwike
Standard spectacles are not built for sport. They slip when you sweat, fog when you breathe, fail in low light, and shatter on impact. We fit dedicated sports eyewear at our Heckmondwike practice for everything from Sunday-league cricket and football to competitive cycling, motorsport, target shooting, swimming, and trail running. Whether you need a prescription pair of cycling glasses to wear with a helmet, an impact-rated pair for cricket or squash, or polarised driving sunglasses with your varifocal prescription built in — we work through your sport, your prescription, and your face shape to fit something that performs.
What we fit for sport
Prescription cycling glasses — wraparound interchangeable-lens frames from Oakley Prizm, Adidas, and BBB Cycling. We can fit a prescription insert (clip-in carrier) behind a wraparound lens, or grind your full prescription into a curve-matched lens. Photochromic and polarised tinted options for variable light.
Prescription swimming goggles — moulded prescription lenses from Speedo, Aqua Sphere, and View Swimming. We measure your prescription in 0.5 dioptre steps and order the goggle direct from the supplier. Lead time ~10 days.
Cricket & squash impact glasses — Wiley X and Bolle impact-rated frames meet ASTM F803 (cricket) and BS EN 166 standards. Required for junior cricket in most Yorkshire leagues. We work with players from Cleckheaton Cricket Club, Heckmondwike Cricket Club, and Mirfield CC.
Shooting & motorsport eyewear — Pilla, Randolph, and Bolle ranges, with yellow / vermilion / amber tints for target acquisition. Prescription-ready.
Running, fishing & general outdoor — Maui Jim, Oakley, Smith Optics. Polarised options for fishing and water sports, photochromic for trail running, hydrophobic coatings for rain.
Why Heckmondwike patients come to us for sport
Yorkshire is cricket country, and impact-rated junior cricket glasses are now mandatory in most local leagues from age 11. We fit cricket eyewear for players across the Spen Valley Junior Cricket League, Heckmondwike Town CC, and Cleckheaton CC. We also see a steady stream of cyclists from the routes through Liversedge, Roberttown, and along the Spen Valley Greenway — many wanting a single pair of photochromic cycling glasses to replace switching between clear and tinted lenses on variable rides.
What changes when sports eyewear is fitted properly: lenses do not slip, prescription accuracy stays constant through head movement, peripheral vision opens up, glare reduces, and (for tinted) contrast genuinely improves on grass, water, or road. Most patients who try a properly-fitted pair tell us they did not realise how much they had been compensating with their everyday glasses.
How a sports eyewear fitting works
Book a 45-minute eyewear styling consultation. We talk through your sport (or sports), how often you train and compete, your current prescription, and your light conditions (early morning, late evening, indoor lighting, sunlight, water glare). We then pull the frames that fit — sport, prescription range, face shape, helmet compatibility — and you try them on with sample lenses. For complex prescriptions or wrap-around frames, we calculate the curve compensation in advance so we can show you accurately what you would see through the fitted pair.
Lead times: in-stock sports frames with single-vision lenses are typically ready in 5-7 working days. Varifocal sports lenses, prescription swimming goggles, and curve-matched cycling lenses are 10-14 working days. We always tell you the realistic timeline at the fitting; we do not promise what we cannot deliver.
Pricing
Sports frames range from £80 (standard wraparound with insert) to £450 (premium photochromic varifocal cycling pieces). Lens packages start at £100 for single-vision in standard frames, £180 for HD single-vision in curved sports lenses, and £350-£480 for sports varifocal packages. Prescription swimming goggles are typically £80-£140 all-in including the goggle and lens. We will give you a full written quote at the fitting; nothing happens to your card until the order is placed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get varifocal sports glasses?
Yes. We fit sports varifocals (progressive lenses in wraparound or cycling frames) regularly. The lens design needs to be optimised for the frame curve, so we measure the pantoscopic tilt, vertex distance, and wrap angle precisely. Sports varifocal lens packages start at £350.
My child plays cricket — what do they actually need?
For junior cricket in Yorkshire leagues, the requirement is typically a frame meeting ASTM F803 (sports impact) standards with a polycarbonate or trivex lens. Wiley X make a strong range from age 8 upwards. We can fit kids cricket glasses with the prescription you already have on file; if your child needs an updated prescription we offer free NHS eye tests for under-16s.
I cycle in winter — do I need clear and tinted lenses?
Most regular cyclists end up with either a photochromic single pair (auto-tinting based on light) or a wraparound frame with interchangeable lens carriers. Photochromic is more convenient; interchangeable is more accurate at the dark end. We will show you both options.
Do you do prescription ski goggles?
Yes — same workflow as swimming goggles. Direct order through Bolle, Smith, or Oakley with your prescription. Lead time ~14 days. Order at least 3 weeks before your ski trip to allow for any adjustments.
