Sports eyewear at Abra & Co, Cheadle

Standard spectacles do not survive sport. They slip, fog, fail in low light, and shatter on impact. We fit dedicated sports eyewear at our Cheadle practice for everything from local cycling clubs to weekend runners, swimmers, cricketers, and motorsport enthusiasts. Whether you need prescription cycling glasses to wear under a helmet, prescription swimming goggles, sports varifocals, or polarised sunglasses with your driving prescription — we work through your sport, your prescription, and your fit before we order anything.

What we fit for sport

Prescription cycling glasses — wraparound interchangeable-lens frames from Oakley Prizm, Adidas, and BBB Cycling. Prescription insert (clip-in carrier) for high prescriptions, or full curve-matched prescription lenses for lower prescriptions. Photochromic and polarised options available.

Prescription swimming goggles — moulded prescription lenses from Speedo, Aqua Sphere, and View Swimming. Available in 0.5 dioptre increments. Lead time ~10 days.

Impact-rated sports frames — Wiley X and Bolle frames meeting ASTM F803 (cricket) and BS EN 166 standards. Required for junior cricket in most Cheshire and Greater Manchester leagues.

Polarised sun + sport — Maui Jim, Oakley, Smith Optics, Costa Del Mar. Polarised tints for fishing, water sports, driving, and golf. All available with prescription.

Shooting & motorsport — Pilla, Randolph, Bolle. Yellow / vermilion / amber tints for target acquisition. Prescription-ready.

Why patients across South Manchester come to us for sports eyewear

We see sports eyewear patients from across the Cheadle catchment — Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, Wilmslow, Handforth, Hale, Hale Barns, Alderley Edge, Hazel Grove, Heaton Mersey, Didsbury, Bredbury, Marple. The reasons most often given: we hold the breadth of sports range, we run the prescription calculations precisely (curve compensation matters in wraparound frames), and we have the time — 45-minute styling consultation included, not a 10-minute rep visit. A properly-fitted sports pair is dramatically different from your everyday glasses pressed into sports duty.

How a sports eyewear fitting works

Book a 45-minute eyewear styling consultation. We discuss your sport, your light conditions, your current prescription, and how often you train. We then pull frames that match your sport + prescription + face shape + helmet compatibility. For wraparound or curved frames we calculate the curve compensation in advance so we can show you accurately what the fitted pair will look like through. Most sports frames are ready in 5-7 working days; varifocal sports lenses, prescription swimming goggles, and curve-matched cycling lenses are 10-14 days.

Pricing

Sports frames from £80 (entry wraparound with insert) to £450 (premium photochromic varifocal cycling pieces). Lens packages start at £100 for single-vision standard, £180 for HD single-vision in curved sports lenses, and £350-£480 for sports varifocal packages. Prescription swimming goggles typically £80-£140 all-in. Full written quote at the fitting; nothing charged until you confirm the order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get varifocal sports glasses?

Yes. We fit sports varifocals (progressive lenses in wraparound or cycling frames) regularly. The lens design is optimised for the frame curve, so we measure pantoscopic tilt, vertex distance, and wrap angle precisely. Sports varifocal packages from £350.

My child plays junior cricket — what do they need?

Most Cheshire and Greater Manchester junior cricket leagues require a frame meeting ASTM F803 with a polycarbonate or trivex lens. Wiley X make a strong kids range from age 8. We can fit kids cricket glasses with your child’s existing prescription; if they need an updated one we offer free NHS eye tests for under-16s.

I cycle in all weather — clear or tinted?

Most regular cyclists end up with either a photochromic single pair (auto-tinting with light) or a wraparound frame with interchangeable lens carriers. Photochromic is more convenient; interchangeable is sharper at the dark end. We will show you both at the fitting.

Can you do prescription ski goggles?

Yes — same workflow as swimming goggles. We order through Bolle, Smith, or Oakley with your prescription. Lead time ~14 days. Order at least 3 weeks before your trip to allow for any adjustments.
