Dry eye assessment at Armitage Opticians, Heckmondwike
The A62 from Huddersfield to Market Street. Your own glands on the screen, and nothing decided in the room.

Does this sound like your eyes?

Recognise three of these? Your glands are the likely reason. Twenty minutes up the A62, we can show you.

  • “Huddersfield Royal said dry eye, gave me drops, and I am no better a year on.”
  • “The moor wind between Marsden and town has my eyes streaming.”
  • “Clear at nine, gritty by three, every working day.”
  • “I have a shelf of drops and gels and none of them lasted an hour.”
  • “The lenses got uncomfortable, so I stopped, and I miss them.”
  • “They burn at night and my lids are stuck in the morning.”
  • “Lid wipes every evening for two years, as told, and no different.”
  • “I was told it comes with age, at fifty-one.”

There is a cause for every one of those, and it can be photographed twenty minutes away in Heckmondwike. Once you have seen your own glands, you will understand why the drops never worked.

“Very thorough exam and I did not feel rushed. All the findings were explained to me and advice given for my dry eyes.”

What is actually happening

Blocked glands, not a lack of tears. That is why it can be treated.

The short version. The full explanation is on our main dry eye page.

  • The water on your eye needs a lid of oil, or it evaporates. That oil is what most people with dry eye are short of.
  • It is made in glands inside the eyelids, twenty to thirty of them along each lid, and released with every blink.
  • When the glands block, the water goes within seconds of a blink. Grit, burning, a smeared screen, and then the eye waters because it is dry.
  • A drop lasts minutes because it only replaces water. Clearing the gland is the treatment, and it has to be done by hand.

Types of dry eye

The three types of dry eye, and what we do for each

Most people are told “you’ve got dry eyes” and handed drops. But there are three different causes, and each needs something different. Most people have a mix.

  1. Blocked oil glands: meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)

About 8 in 10 people with dry eye have this. Along the edge of each eyelid are about 30 tiny glands that put a thin layer of oil on your tears. When they block, your tears dry up in seconds, however much water your eyes make. It feels gritty, burning and tired, often worse on screens or by evening. Drops help for an hour, because they don’t unblock the glands.

What we do: photograph your glands so you can see them, warm and clear them in clinic, clean the lid edge, and use IPL or light therapy where it helps (IPL at our Cheadle and Middleton clinics). Then we give you a simple routine for home.

  2. Not enough tears

Your eyes don’t make enough of the watery part of tears. This is more common with age, some medicines, the menopause, and conditions like Sjögren’s.

What we do: measure your tear level, choose the right drops for you, and use tiny plugs to keep your own tears in where they help. We’ll write to your GP if something needs checking.

  3. Inflamed eyelids: blepharitis, often with tiny mites called Demodex

Crusty, itchy, red lid edges, often worse in the morning.

What we do: deep-clean the lid edge in clinic, treat the mites, and show you how to keep the lids clean at home.

Not sure which one you have? That’s what the assessment is for. We look at your glands, tears and lids, and tell you which type, or which mix.

Inside the assessment

What the assessment measures, in brief

One visit, everything measured, a written plan to take back to Huddersfield.

  • Your story, in numbers: the symptom score, the hours on a screen, what you have tried, and a close look at the lids before anything else.
  • Your tear film, measured: how much tear, how many seconds it holds, and where the surface has been damaged.
  • The reason, found: the lid edge examined, the lashes checked, the blink counted, and in the full assessment every gland imaged. Then your results and the plan on paper.

The fee is £145, or £225 with the swab, and £50 of it comes off whichever treatment follows. All nine measurements, explained →
