Urgent eye care in Cheadle: same day, free, and the right specialist if you need one

Do not sit in Stepping Hill for a sore eye. Ring Wilmslow Road, come in today, and let an optometrist look at it properly under the microscope. It costs nothing with a local GP, you do not need to have been here before, and if it is one for the eye hospital we arrange that while you are in the chair.

Come here first

Sore eye? Come to Abra & Co Cheadle today, for free.

Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Gatley, Bramhall, Stockport, Wilmslow, Handforth, Didsbury: wherever you are, come here first. We look at the eye properly today, and if it needs a specialist, we refer you on and fast-track it ourselves.

Rung the GP?

Come here instead. We have the eye microscope, the pressure check and the retinal scanner the surgery doesn’t, and we see you today, not next week. We’ll write to your GP afterwards.

Thinking about A&E?

Come here first. Twenty minutes with an optometrist on Wilmslow Road beats hours at Stepping Hill, and we have the equipment to find what’s wrong. If it needs the eye hospital, we ring Manchester Royal Eye Hospital while you’re in the chair, send your scans ahead, and you go in fast-tracked, not to the back of the queue.

Never been to Abra & Co?

Doesn’t matter. Anyone nearby with an urgent eye problem is seen today, free with a local GP. No referral, no forms, no charge. Ring, and you’re booked in.

The reasons people in Cheadle ring us today

All of them are seen the same day.

“My eye has gone red and sticky.”

Conjunctivitis, most often, or an inflamed lid, or dry eye that has flared. Seen today and usually sorted with a prescription or a plan in the chair.

“I have a scratched eye, or grit in it.”

Do not rub. Rinse with clean water and ring. A drop of dye under the microscope shows a scratch the naked eye cannot see, and a foreign body can be lifted out.

“Flashes and a shower of floaters.”

Ring today, even if it seems to have passed. Usually harmless, sometimes a retinal tear that needs the eye hospital fast. We photograph and scan the back of the eye and tell you which.

“A patch of my vision is missing.”

Ring now. Sudden change in one eye is seen the same day. A curtain dropping across the vision is A&E, not us.

“A hot, swollen lump on my eyelid.”

A stye or a blocked gland: treated here. Hot, spreading and with a temperature: seen today.

“My contact lens eye is sore.”

Lens out now, keep the lens, and ring. Lens wearers are seen the same day because an infection under a lens can damage the surface quickly.

Free. Same-day appointments at Abra & Co, 19 Wilmslow Road.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free in Cheadle?

Yes, for anyone registered with a GP in the area, through the NHS urgent eye care scheme. Not registered locally? Tell us and we still see you today, for £60.

Should I go to Stepping Hill instead?

Only for an injury, chemicals or sudden loss of sight. For a red, sore, gritty or blurry eye, an optometrist with a microscope will diagnose it in twenty minutes, and if it turns out to need the hospital we ring Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and send them the scans.

I am in Bramhall or Wilmslow. Is Cheadle the nearest?

Usually, yes: ten to fifteen minutes up the A34 with parking at the door. Our Heald Green practice on Finney Lane is the alternative for Gatley and Wythenshawe.

Can I walk in?

You can, and we will do our best. A phone call first means the slot is held and the optometrist is expecting you.
