This is not a lesser version of an eye test. We bring the equipment, we take the time, and we treat you exactly as we would in our Middleton practice — because that’s the standard we hold ourselves to, wherever we are.

A proper eye test — not a shortened version

Most home eye tests take around thirty minutes. Basic equipment. A prescription at the end.

We don’t offer that version.

We set aside a full 60 minutes for every home visit in Middleton — sometimes longer. We bring specialist portable diagnostic equipment that gives our optometrists a full, clear view of the back of your eye — the retina, the optic nerve, the lens. We check properly for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic changes, and anything else that warrants attention.

If your current glasses need updating, we tell you. If they’re absolutely fine, we tell you that too. The quality of the advice you receive doesn’t change based on whether you buy from us.

Your glasses, your choice

Being seen at home in Middleton doesn’t mean settling for a limited selection of frames. We bring a curated range of eyewear to every visit — styles, sizes, and price points from NHS-funded options through to premium frames. If you want to look great in your glasses, we can help you do that.

After your glasses are made, we come back to deliver and fit them at home, adjust them until they’re right, and return again if they need tweaking after a week or two of wear.

What a visit looks like

We come to you. One of our GOC-registered, DBS-checked optometrists from our Middleton team arrives at your home at the agreed time with their full portable kit.

We take our time. The appointment is unhurried. If you want five minutes before we begin, we take five minutes. If you’d like to ask questions as we go, we answer them. If you need a break during the test, we stop.

We examine thoroughly. Full case history, vision assessment, prescription, and a complete check of your eye health — retina, optic nerve, lens, and assessment for any conditions that need attention or monitoring.

We tell you clearly what we found. Not in medical shorthand. In plain language, with time for questions.

We come back. If you order glasses, we return to fit them. We don’t post them. We adjust them in your home until they’re right.

What it costs

NHS-funded — free if eligible

If you cannot leave home unaccompanied due to physical or mental illness or disability, you are likely eligible for an NHS-funded home eye test in Middleton at no cost. NHS optical vouchers may also apply towards your glasses. We check eligibility when you call — you don’t need to work this out yourself beforehand.

Private — £200, with £100 towards glasses

If you don’t meet the NHS criteria but would like a home visit in Middleton regardless, the private appointment is £200. If you choose to order glasses from us, £100 is credited towards the cost.

Why you can trust us

GOC Registered — Every optometrist is registered with the General Optical Council. You can verify any optometrist’s registration at optical.org.

DBS Checked — Every clinician who carries out home visits holds a current enhanced DBS check. We don’t send anyone into a patient’s home without it.

Family-owned and independent — Abra & Co is owned and run by the Khan family. The optometrists who visit you are the same clinicians who see patients in our Middleton practice.

Serving Middleton, Rochdale and Oldham — local eye care you can rely on

Our Middleton practice on Long Street has been serving patients across north Manchester for years. We know this area — the communities, the care homes, the sheltered housing schemes across Rochdale, Oldham and Chadderton. When we visit a patient at home, we’re not a distant provider sending someone unfamiliar. We’re the same team from 36 Long Street, bringing the same standard of care to your front door.

Many of the patients we visit at home in Middleton and Rochdale have been coming to us for years. At some point, getting to the practice on Long Street became more difficult — and we didn’t think that should mean the end of good eye care. So we come to them instead.

What our optometrists check during a home visit in Middleton

A home eye test with Abra & Co Middleton is a full clinical examination — not a shortened version. Here is exactly what we assess during every visit:

  • Visual acuity — how clearly you see at distance and near, and whether your current prescription is still correct
  • Refraction — a precise measurement of your prescription, including any changes since your last test
  • Retinal examination — a thorough check of the back of the eye using specialist portable equipment, looking for signs of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other conditions
  • Optic nerve assessment — checking for early signs of glaucoma
  • Lens examination — looking for cataract development
  • Eye pressure measurement — an important indicator of glaucoma risk
  • Anterior eye health — the front of the eye including the cornea and lids
  • Full case history — current medications, general health, any changes since the last test

Where a specific test genuinely requires equipment we cannot bring to Middleton or Rochdale homes — such as OCT scanning — we will tell you clearly and arrange the appropriate next step at our Long Street practice or via referral.

We proudly serve communities across Middleton, Rochdale, Oldham and north Manchester, bringing professional eye care directly to your doorstep.

If three or more of these describe you, drops alone won’t solve this. The glands need to be cleared. That’s exactly what we specialise in.

Why Abra & Co

We’re an independent group that treats a home visit with exactly the same standard as a practice appointment — proper time, a real eye-health check, expert styling and beautiful eyewear, delivered with warmth and dignity. The people who most need careful eye care are often those who can least easily get to us, and we think they deserve the best of what we do, not the least.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes — because we’ve invested in the portable diagnostic equipment that makes that possible. We bring specialist equipment that gives our optometrists a full, clear view of the back of your eye — the same clinical picture we’d get in our Middleton practice. Where any part of the examination genuinely requires something we can’t transport, we’ll tell you clearly and arrange the right next step.

Not much. Have your current glasses nearby. If you have a list of your current medications, that’s useful — many affect eye health. Your NHS number is helpful but not essential. We’ll ask a few questions when you book and let you know if there’s anything specific to have ready.

None. We tell you what we find and what we recommend. If new glasses would make a real difference, we say so and show you the options. If your current pair is fine, we say that instead. There’s no obligation and no follow-up sales call.

Call our Middleton practice on 0161 653 0771 and ask for a home eye test. We’ll check eligibility, discuss NHS or private, and arrange a date and time that suits you.

Just call us — for yourself or on behalf of a relative — and we’ll handle eligibility and a convenient time.
